The Strand explodes with music to keep you dancing all weekend. From classic jazz and blues; to swing and funk - something for everyone!

Tauranga Central comes alive as an exciting jazz hub with two days of music and entertainment that will keep you dancing all weekend! With multiple stages along the Strand, extending through Red Square, and activity through to the new Grey Street Precinct, there is music for everyone to enjoy, from jazz and swing, to blues and funk. Keep the kids happy at the Family Fun Zone and shop until you drop with the Downtown retailers. Then grab a seat at one of The Strand’s many fine bars and restaurants to enjoy a tantalising meal with your jazz! Strolling musicians and street performances add to the carnival atmosphere that brings downtown to life on Easter Saturday and Sunday.

We are a trio with many horns, too many pedals, drums, vintage synths, and sometimes even a vibraphone, what could possibly go wrong...
Raging horns and heavy rhythms, Barrow Brass Band play with improvised freedom and interplay that can, and does, go in any direction. Grooves through dance, drum and bass, hip hop and second line, Barrow Brass Band plays tunes you know, think you know and make you think.

Bay City Ramblers – Local – Blues/Folk/Country

This 4-piece is dedicated to traveling the backroads of old blues, folk and country, exploring the sounds now called Americana.

Expect resonator guitars, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, washboard and more, on a musical trip that stretches from late 1800's America through the music of Bessie Smith and Woody Guthrie to the contemporary Kiwi blues of their own songs.

Mike Garner and Derek Jacombs are two of New Zealand's most widely respected blues musicians and songwriters. As well as fronting their own bands - the Mike Garner Band and Kokomo respectively - they also lead The Bay City Ramblers which includes Nigel Masters and Robbie Laven.

Gin Rickey Jive – Jazz – Local

Gin Rickey Jive will be playing 2000’s pop music in a 1930, 40 , 50, and 60s jazz style but most tunes will be 30's and 40's style. They are working on a fun new line up for the Carnival.

Hamilton Blues Society x 8 Bands - National – Blues

Relocated from Jazz Village

Hamilton Blues Society have been involved with the National Jazz Festival for almost 10 years and have a large following from their performances at the Jazz Village.

Eight bands from the Hamilton Blues Society will feature at the Downtown Carnival - Saturday on First Credit Union Stage 5 and Sunday Downtown Tauranga Stage 2.



Karate Boogaloo - Funk – International

The rhythm section behind the Cactus Channel.

Four-piece funk sensation that have named themselves after the much-coveted oriental boogaloo craze, anyone can try!

With wailing organ, chanking guitar, bubbling bass and ghetto thumpin' drums, 'Karate Boogaloo' will get the street dancing away.

La Luna and the Gadjos

La Luna

Upbeat and vivacious French gypsy swing, Chanson to New Orleans par excellence.

From the drama of Piaf to the steamy hot clubs of Paris, New Zealand’s premier vocal gypsy band perform an irreverent mix of vivacious gypsy swing or 'Manouche' with the raucous sounds of New Orleans jazz.


Featuring the multilingual talents of La Luna (Caro Manins) and her fabulous Gadjos, together they recreate the sound of French and gypsy classics by the likes of Django Reinhardt, Ellington, Trenet, with the Chanson of Piaf and New Orleans jazz.

Laura

Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band deliver their back porch blend of acoustic blues.  You can expect to hear a little BB, a little Koko, some Muddy Waters and many more with soulful vocals, sweet guitar solos, honky tonk style piano, warm upright bass and percussive drums.

Sarah Spicer and The Blue Riders – Local

Sarah Spicer and The Blue Riders are a Waihi-based music collective featuring NZ X Factor star performer singer/songwriter Sarah Spicer with the Blue Riders: Liam Ryan (keyboards, The Narcs) Nigel Sanderson (drums, Tim Armstrong Band) and Wayne Melville (bass, Torchsongs).

Sarah spent 10 years playing in the USA alongside the cream of American blues artists in the San Francisco/Bay area including John Lee Hooker with whom she recorded.



Shirazz – Jazz/Dixieland – International (Melbourne)

Dedicated to Betty Taylor x  

Shirazz is a six-piece Melbourne trad jazz and dixieland band, specialising in classic hot jazz of the 20s and 30s, and has been fast gaining a reputation as one of Melbourne's premier jazz bands.

Shirazz plays classic traditional jazz as it was meant to be played. With hot solos, driving rhythms and tight arrangements, a set from Shirazz is a step back in time, to a jumping New Orleans dance hall where fast, hot tunes intersect with swinging standards and laid-back Louisiana street beats.  With the odd original tune and some re-imagined pop classics, Shirazz should be enjoyed irresponsibly, and in excess.

A fusion of Funk Soul and Samba, Jazz and Blues grooves, Spiral's high energy, foot tapping beats are sure to keep audiences on their feet...

The Desotos – National – Rock/Blues

The Desotos

After a 2 year wait to be part of the National Jazz Festival, Auckland Americana act The DeSotos bring their widescreen fusion on country rock with jazz influences to Tauranga for an afternoon of original material off their two critically-acclaimed albums. Also featuring new material from vocalist Paul Gurney’s upcoming solo album and some old favourites from the likes of Tom Petty and Neil Young. 

Fueled by a powerful blend of rock-infused country blues, The DeSotos combine rich harmonies with reverberant guitar sounds and warm flourishes of Hammond organ.
